On Common Ground: Improving Classroom Writing Instruction and the Kansas Writing Assessment
The presentation provides updated information and materials on a number of topics centered on the teaching of writing: elements of an effective writing program and an effective writing classroom; strategies for teaching writing, revision, and the 6-TRAIT model; teaching students to write with purpose, audience, and context in mind; making time for writing instruction in the classroom; and information on changes made to the 2008-2009 Kansas Writing Assessment. Ready-to-copy handouts and examples will be provided to help transform your teaching and create more authentic writing experiences for your students.
Speaker Biography:
Matt Copeland is the Writing Consultant for the Kansas State Department of Education. A former English teacher and department head at his alma mater, Washburn Rural High School, in Topeka, Kansas, he has been recognized as the 2006 Distinguished Kansan of the Year in Education, a 2005 Milken National Educator, and a 2003 Kansas Master Teacher. He is a frequent presenter at local, regional, and national conferences and has published several books, essays, and poems on the teaching of English.&nbs
