By Brad Pepper, SCKESC Executive Director

It is my pleasure to welcome all of you to the 2011-2012 school year! I am extremely excited to be the newest team member of the Service Center at ClearWater and have enjoyed getting out to meet many of you in your districts as you gear up for the new school year. I have been so impressed with the quality and capabilities of the staff here at Clearwater that stand ready and able to serve you, your students, and your communities. Their commitment and passion for student success is second to none!

Many exciting opportunities are in store for you in the coming months and we try to anticipate and be proactive of your needs, but we also know that you may not see an area that addresses exactly what you want. With that said, we can create any program or provide any assistance in almost any area that you can think of – so please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of assistance to you.

Again, welcome to the new school year and thank you for allowing us to be part of your service to the students and communities of Kansas!

April 2011 Blue Ribbon Awards –
Awards that come from our hearts, made with our hands.
BlueRibbon

April recipients, Rob Reynolds and Mike Roth.

Rob Reynolds is a relatively new superintendent in Douglass who spends his days finding ways to support his teachers so that their jobs can be done effectively.  He believes in professional development, collegial time for teachers , and resources for students.  He visits his buildings regularly to provide support for both teachers and administrators, and he misses his interaction with students.  As he looks forward to next year, he is continuing to make cuts as far away from the classroom as possible, while still maintaining a positive outlook for the educational process in Douglass.  Rob is his district’s greatest cheerleader!

Mike Roth is the superintendent at Clearwater School District.  He is working hard to find ways to continue to support his teachers, staff and students. He believes in professional development and resources for his students.  He has also had the opportunity in the last two years to serve as the President of Admin Council at The Service Center at Clearwater.  He has done a great job overseeing the meeting and making sure we all stayed on task (not a easy job).  We want to thank him for his wiliness to serve in this position.

SCKESC Honors Retirees
by Shirley Farmer

The Service Center at Clearwater honors its member district Superintendents when they retire by placing a brick in their honor at The Kansas Teacher Hall of Fame in Dodge City, Kansas.  Each retiree receives a paperweight replica of the brick that says “A Brick has been placed in the Walk of Fame at The Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame...”

This tradition was started several years ago as a way to say thank-you to our district leaders. Visit the Hall at http://www.visitdodgecity.org/index.aspx?nid=86.

I was fortunate enough to attend the NCTM Conference this year in Indianapolis, IN April 13-16, 2011.  It has been several years since I had gone to this conference.  I forgot how refreshing it can be.  I came back more excited than I have been for a while about being a Mathematics Educator.  I was able to attend sessions at the conference that focused on teaching strategies and best practices in our classrooms.  I have a new “drawer” full of ideas to share with other teachers.  Here are a few of the session topics I was able to attend:

  • Teaching Fraction Division Can Be Easier
  • Geometry as a Vehicle, Not a Destination
  • I Spy Geometry around Me
  • Differentiating the Math Classroom to Engage All Students
  • When Teachers  Analyze Students’ Work

As you can see the topics were quiet varied.  I tried to attend sessions for all grade level bands.  There were several sessions that addressed the Common Core Standards and how we need to start look at them on our classrooms.

NCTM is working very hard to provide teachers the support they will need as we transition over to the Common Core Standards.  If you are not familiar with NCTM please visit their website at www.nctm.org.

March 2011 Blue Ribbon Awards –
Awards that come from our hearts, made with our hands.
 Clay250Andy250

March recipients, Clay Murphy and Andy Koenigs.

Clay Murphy – USD 356

Clay Murphy was given this award because of his commitment to his students, teachers, and parents in his districts.  In his positions of Superintendent and Middle School Principal he works hard to show his students how much he cares about their education.  He has also been a continued supporter of the Service Center in many of the programs we have available to districts.  We can also always count on Clay to make us smile.  He is quick with a joke which can really help in these stressful times.

Andy Koenigs – USD 385

Andy Koenigs was given this Blue Ribbon Award because of his dedication to his district and the service center.  In his work as Associate Superintendent he is responsible for providing his teachers with professional development and many other forms of support.  He is committed to making sure his teachers and students get the best possible education.

Our Mission Statement
